Butmoststrikingofall,andpossiblythemostenduringimagewhichtheviewerwilltakeawaywiththem,isofthemasterfulsymbolismwithwhichdirectorGreeneinvestseveryshot.EveryinchoftheKinchfamily'sworld-theirhouse,theirwalls,theirTV,Aguttersunderwear,bedroomfurnitureandtoys,Sutcliffe'sclothes,Marshallsvan,thelocalCatholicchurch,theirtowncentre,theirrecordshop)-ispaintedabright,scintillatingwhite-awhitewhich,byinference,isslowlybecomingsmudgedandcorruptedwiththedirtoftheoutsideworld.Whitealsosymbolises,ofcourse,purityandinnocence(twoqualitiesCatholicschoolgirlsaresupposedtoholddear),anditisintothisworldofinnocencethattheever-presentredbus(asymbolofviolationandpenetration),conductedbythelecherousyetsimilarlyjuvenileSimonWard,makesregularjourneys.TheallegoryisfurtherexpandedinonescenewhereAgutterbelievessheseestheChristfigureinchurchweepingblood:bythetimeweacknowledgeit,itsgone,buttheseedhasalreadybeenplanted.Rarelyinagenreproductionhastheuseofcolourandbackgroundbeensoimportantoreffectiveincreatingauniformityofmood.
